Flooding kills two in China's Nanning as east braces for super typhoon

Beijing, July 6, 2026 — Heavy flooding in southern China’s Guangxi region has killed two people and affected tens of thousands more as Typhoon Maysak swept inland, officials said Monday. In Nanning, the regional capital, about 55,000 residents have been impacted. Water levels at three reservoirs overflowed or broke through barriers, prompting authorities to raise the flood emergency response to its highest level. Deputy Mayor Wei Jiang warned that “extremely heavy rain” could worsen conditions and slow rescue efforts. Videos from nearby Guigang showed cars submerged and torrents of muddy water rushing into construction sites. In Fangchenggang, floodwaters swept away vehicles and left residents struggling to hold onto scooters and belongings. Meteorologists said Maysak, which hit Hainan island on Friday before moving into Vietnam and then Guangxi, will continue to bring heavy rain across Guangxi, Guizhou, and Hunan — regions home to more than 150 million people. China is also bracing for Super Typhoon Bavi, which is moving across the Pacific with winds up to 180 miles per hour. Weather authorities warned Bavi could strike eastern China later this week, bringing more strong winds and rain. The government has released emergency funds — 100 million yuan from the state planner and 160 million yuan from the finance ministry and emergency agencies — to support relief efforts in Guangxi and five other provinces. Analysts note that extreme weather, worsened by climate change, is costing China tens of billions of dollars each year as floods disrupt cities, industries, and agriculture. Would you like me to expand on Typhoon Maysak’s impact in Vietnam, Super Typhoon Bavi’s path, or China’s climate change challenges?
